SATELLITE is proud to present
_Towards a semi-autonomous self-perpetuating art (phone sex)_
__an audio installation by Cai Nyahoe
___Duration: 5min 44sec_
This sound piece is part of a series of works primarily exploring the role
of the viewer in the production of art. In this piece the artist is seeking
to restructure the contract between producer and consumer in a manner that
favours the producer.
This process has created a number of subtexts/by-products.
Though no specific work is discussed a temporal work is generated through
allusions to the dimensions of the piece, though these dimensions vary in
relation to the ‘tasks’ requested by the artist: a device that
simultaneously asserts and surrenders control of the work. In the context of
other related pieces in particular "I really like you" (2007) Nyahoe has
created a persona that is representative of a tendency inherent in the
exhibition of work namely; the desire of the artist to seek external
approval and conformation.
Though this notion is taken to an extreme in this project these pieces; at
times humorous are not entirely satirical. (phone sex) also inevitably leads
the listener/viewer to question the nature of coercion and acceptable modes
of behaviour in marginalised and inherently exploitative industries (in this
case the sex trade). For the duration of the call certain unspoken rules are
observed and a dual narrative is created: that of the artist seeking
affirmation and the ‘client’ seeking physical gratification.
It should be noted that although obscenity has been edited from the piece
this is NOT in order to increase its palatability but rather to highlight
the complicity of those hearing the work in the unfolding dialogue.

SATELLITE is proud to present _TUNDRA _a solo exhibition of new sculpture by
Graeme Durant. Durant's work stems from personal reflections upon certain materials and their transformations. Like the anagrammatical use of the artists name
embedded in the title of the exhibition (that points, romantically, towards a collectively held understanding of the vast, treeless, perma-frost of a body of land); Durant similarly reorders a formalist sculptural vocabulary of form, volume and matter to play host to personal memory and experience. !!TEPRAC is a precarious rectilinear stack of four irregular, off-white cuboids on top of which sits a small wooden object in the form of an Archimedean Solid. This highly symmetrical, 'pure form' sits in opposition to the asymmetry of the architectonic white chipboard forms beneath it. Each of these units are carpeted on one face and, peculiarly sandwiched between the top and second object sits a generous block of foam brick. The dimension of each of these forms corresponds to a scaled version of all of the rooms in which the artist has lived. Durant begins with the abstract and leads us
back towards representation, and somehow to a registration of his own presence in space and his own narrative.
We'd like to extend a warm welcome to the Settle Down coffee shop. Run by our pal Neil, the cosy cafe will provide refreshments and delicious home-made food galore ( seriously, the vege-sausage and salsa panini is gorgeous! ) in a chilled-out, friendly atmosphere. The coffee shop is located under the same roof as the alt.vinyl store, so you can wander freely between the two, browsing vinyl with the aromo of fine coffee filling your nostrils, or sating your hunger to the wildest sounds from the underground.
The coffee shop is open 8 til7 through the week and 9 til 6 on a saturday. Come on down and say hello!
alt.vinyl is proud to announce the release of 'Last 30 Mins', an astounding piece of sound-art from Jim Harold and Matthew Sansom. Last 30 Mins consists of sound fragments taken from the last Iraq Radio broadcasts to be picked up by recievers in the UK before radio signals were jammes by coalition forces in April 2003. The work was originally presented at the Centre For Contemporary Art, Glasgow, in January 2004 as a generative multi-speaker sound installation. It's limited to 100 copies, each individually numbered, and comes beautifully pressed on transparent 11" lathe, hand-cut by the illustrious Peter King in New Zealand.
